14th US-Japan Workshop
on
Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion

Sponsored by the University System of Maryland Foundation (USMF), the UMD Department of Aerospace Engineering, and the UMD Space Power and Propulsion Laboratory.

Inertial-electrostatic confinement (IEC) is a compact and inexpensive process for researching the physics of nuclear fusion. Applications of IEC research include novel sources of high energy neutrons and protons, and electrical energy generation. The 14th US-Japan Workshop on IEC fusion will be held in College Park, MD on October 14-17, 2012.

Getting to the Conference

The workshop will be held at the Samual Riggs Alumni Center which is a short walk from the the Marriott Inn & Conference Center, University of Maryland University College (see hotel booking on the left-hand menu for more information). Parking is located at the Stadium Drive Garage a short distance north of the Riggs Center. Current rates at this facility are $3.00 per hour, with a $15.00 per day maximum and a $5 per day maximum on Saturday and Sunday.

There are 3 airports that serve the Washington metro area:

  1. Ronald Reagan International - 14 miles from campus. Metro accessible and provides Super Shuttle or taxi service.
  2. Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport - 25 miles from campus, has a shuttle bus to metro, Super Shuttle, or taxi service.
  3. Dulles International Airport - 37 miles from campus. Offers several ground transportation options as well as metro bus service.

For more information on using Washington's Metrorail, please see here. The metro can be taken to the College Park metro station (on the green line). A UMD shuttle bus (#104) can take you to the campus. The bus drops passengers at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, a short walking distance from the Samual Riggs Alumni Center. The IEC 2012 Workshop welcomes you to College Park, MD.

College Park—located just outside Washington, D.C.—provides convenient access to the area’s many federal agencies and labs, to technology companies large, and small and is home to part of the National Archives and the College Park Aviation Museum. The Washington metro region is the epicenter of the U.S. tech-economy and is home to cultural institutions like the Smithsonian Institute and the National Mall. Washington, DC is also home to the National Air and Space Museum which holds the world's largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft.
