Guidelines for Double Majors /Degrees :

The order of obtaining signatures should be done using this sequence

• A student must be enrolled in the major program from which he/she plans to graduate when registering for the final 15 hours of a 120 credit baccalaureate program.
• Students must file this application no later than one full academic year before their expected date of graduation.
• If two colleges are involved with the application process the student’s primary college will be responsible for the maintenance of records, exceptions to policy, and certification of CORE requirements.
• Final approval of a double major or double degree program must be obtained from each of the appropriate departments and college(s).
• Effective Spring 2005: All Engineering (ENXX), Basic Sciences and Technical Courses must be completed with a grade of 2.0 or better.
UNIVERSITY POLICIES:
Policy on Second Majors (Double Majors)
A student must complete a double major simultaneously. Students must obtain written permission in advance from the appropriate departments, programs, and colleges. In order to obtain approval, students must complete all the requirements specified for both the primary and secondary major.
Policy on Second Degrees taken Simultaneously (Double Degrees)
A student who wishes to receive two baccalaureate degrees simultaneously must satisfactorily complete the regularly prescribed requirements of both degree programs and a minimum of 150 credits (180 credits if one of the degrees is Special Education). All forms must be completed, reviewed, and approved as early as possible, but no later than one full academic year before the expected date of graduation. The student must file with the departments or programs involved, as well as with the appropriate deans, formal programs showing the courses to be offered, to meet the major, support area, college, and general education program requirements
Policy of Double Degrees taken Sequentially (Double Degrees)
A student who has completed the requirements for and has received one baccalaureate degree and who wishes to earn a second baccalaureate degree from the University of Maryland must satisfactorily complete all of the prescribed requirements for the second degree and enough additional credits so that the total number of credits is at least 150(180 credits if one of the degree is in Special Education) This includes all applicable credit earned at UM, or elsewhere, In no case will a second baccalaureate degree be awarded to a student who has not completed a minimum of 30 credits in residence at the University of Maryland.
