Student ResponsibilitiesThe benefits associated with our faculty advising program are many; it also entails a number of obligations on the student’s part. You are responsible for preparing for each advising session and providing certain information to your faculty advisor. By complying with these responsibilities, your advisor is better able to guide and facilitate your development thus allowing you to get more out of the program.

1. Keep your faculty advisor informed about your academic progress and professional development.

2. Meet with your faculty advisor every semester PRIOR to attempting to register for the next semester. Failure to do so will delay your registration as all engineering students are required to be advised prior to registration each semester.

3. Meet with your advisor as early as possible prior to your registration appointment. Not being able to meet with your advisor because you waited until a couple of days before your registration date will not be accepted as an excuse and consequently you may not be able to register on time.

4. Be prepared for each meeting with your advisor. For example, if you wish to discuss specific course content should first read the relevant descriptions in the “Approved Courses” section of the Undergraduate Catalog or the course listing online, as well as viewing the aerospace degree requirements.

5. Remember, your advisor is not a mind reader. You must express your personal needs and concerns to your advisor so they are better able to advise and/or direct you to appropriate UMCP resources.

6. While your advisor is there to provide guidance and structure, you are ultimately responsible for fulfilling your degree requirements and graduating in a timely matter. These responsibilities include making decisions about your class schedule, whether or not to pursue specific educational options, which CORE electives to take, etc.

7. Any concerns you are not able to discuss with your advisor, you can discuss with Dr. Darryll Pines (department chair), Dr. Alison Flatau (undergraduate program director), or Dr. Nicole Roop (undergraduate program, associate director). If need be, you can also talk with an advisor in the School of Engineering’s Office of Undergraduate Advising & Academic Support located at 1124 Martin Hall, 301.405.3855

Additionally, as a college student, you are responsible for:
• Monitoring your own academic progress;
• Knowing the degree requirements of the college and major of interest;
• Communicating with your advisor or department regarding issues and/or concerns about academics or student life;
• Learning and understanding your course material;
• Attending classes;
• Managing your time;
• Becoming familiar with resources on and off campus;
• Understanding and adhering to university policies.
